Finally, after more than a year, I can proudly upload a new picture. Hopefully you will like it :)
This picture took me a century to finish, I guess I spent more than 200 hours on this one.

Edit: Changed lighting and colors, so both characters fit more into the scene :)

Edit: Changed lighting and colors... again :P See progress file for details:

Edit: Another change, yeah... This time I tried to overwork the anatomy of the dragon. Giving her more room for muscles and organs.

Special thanks to *Cloister and his wonderful service he offers to get a professional feedback: [link]

My eyes just bled, due to viewing too much awesome.

I love the colors on that dragon, and the lighting is perfect.
Amazing scale work here. :3

Does this, perchance, have a story behind it?

Thanks! :D I'm really happy you like it that much :)
Well. Yes. It's quite a personal piece from me. The dragon represent myself (since I'd love to be dragon if I could) and the warrior represents my boyfriend.
It was my idea to draw us both in a fantasy form (of what we would like to be in a different world) in an epic scene like this- well, I tried to make it look epic at least. I thought them standing there, over viewing the land below them, maybe after a successful fight together :)

Aw, that's sweet. :3

Well it certainly does look epic. 10 out of 10 on that.

Epic! I love the more intense presence of the clouds, since that does seem to be the primary change you made here. Shifting the light source makes a big difference as well. Looks like you got some pretty helpful advice! :D

Thanks :aww:
Yeah, I changed the background quite a bit- removed the high contrast from black to white and moved the light source a bit to the left. I also changed the colors of the whole picture a bit, especially of the dragon (have a look at the progression file for details, if you're interested to see the differences: [link] )

Hehe, yeah, this time I actually paid for getting a good critique.. *Cloister offers a service where you pay to get a critique from him: [link]
Which is awesome, this really helped me to see what was still wrong with the picture (which I could feel it was). And since it's an important picture for me, I happily paid the price :)

Gee, you changed a lot. It's subtle, but it definitely looks a lot better!

The main change I see is the shift in the dragon's hindlegs. You also deepened his chest where his neck comes down. It's amazing how much better these changes look. I didn't even see them as problems before. XD And it gave you more room to add extra skin, like up under the wing arm. Very neat. :) Were these all suggestions from Cloister's critique as well?

I'm happy it looks better to you! :)

Yep, that's the main changes I made here- I didn't notice those mistakes either for quite some time, only after someone pointed it out for me.. But it wasn't Cloister who pointed it out- he mainly advised me using different colors, add middle range values and lessen the contrast in the background. The advice to change the anatomy of the dragon came from the group #ConceptWorld : They offer you to get a critique for your picture if you want. Someone there even made a paint over for me :) Well, that showed me that the anatomy of the dragon was somewhat wrong. :P
It's amazing.. so many things can be wrong in a picture and even you as artist won't notice them until some actually mention there is something wrong. I guess the main thing I learned here is to work more on the anatomy of the creatures I draw- it's quite annoying having to change them in the end, because you would need to erase most of the details of the parts you need to correct AND draw all the details for corrections.. Would have been better to draw the details just once :P

I'm quite impressed with your dedication to this piece, since you keep getting it critiqued and then improving on it. :) It's hard enough to get good critiques/suggestions (I appreciate that you try to give me suggestions though, like in my diver picture :) ), but even once someone points out an improvement, I think it takes a lot of effort just to go back to an old picture that you've already finished.

Heh, yes, normally I guess I would leave it like it is, but since this one will be printed out when I declare it as finished, I strive to make it as perfect as possible. After all, I need to look at it every day when it's on the wall.. :P (and it's being huge, I uploaded the small version of it.. the original file has 7844x5000 pixels - 72dpi )
This picture also has kind of a special meaning behind it.
So, I usually make some changes for a picture, but surely not as many big ones as I did here :P

Oh, that's cool, I didn't know you were planning on printing this out! It would definitely look good hanging on a wall. It makes sense that you would want this to be your best work in that case.

I don't think I could ever print out my own art to hang up. That would just be... weird. XD

Thanks, I'm glad you think it looks good enough for printing it out :)

It's weird for me as well, I usually can't look at my own pictures for a long time, since I start seeing too many things which I want to change.. Well, this picture here is a special case. I had the idea of drawing my boyfriend and me a while ago as fantasy beings (I'm the dragon and he's the warrior in this picture).. I guess I also could have commissioned this picture from someone, but it never would be the same..
Another reason why I really want it to be as good as possible. :P

Your welcome! Heheh, that's what I do often too, I'm still unhappy with a few of my own works,
like my "Little Girl's Monster", I'm unhappy with the background as it's not as crisp as the creature,
I spent ages doing different backgrounds for it but I ended up just going with that one, I'll probably come back to it later down the track. :P
I remember seeing the earlier one of this ages ago, back then it was still very good, but I think now it's just right. :D
This is probably one of my faves of yours, it's got a good atmosphere to it, and the dragons feathers are are like brilliant gem stones with their hints or turquoise, all the colors and details really work well together. My other fave of yours is the Katana on the water one you did. :)

Yep, that's what I'm doing as well... I sometime return to my old pictures in order to improve them- sometime just a little bit and sometime I change a whole lot about it, since I actually like the idea of the picture, but not how I tried to visualize it back then :P

Hmm, that's nice to hear glad you like it! :) I think I spent much more effort and time into this picture- which is why it took me so long to finish it ^^;
Hehe, both works hava Katanas in the picture^^

Something that happens to me regularly, is that half the images I start I actually never finish,
I get bored of doing them, or struggle to get them to look the way I imagined and thus i give up on them.

I noticed that they both have a Katana :P I do love swords.

Well, I finish those pictures I started to draw- I won't let me not finish one. The downside of this is, I might get reeeeaally slow, because I don't have any motivation left for finishing the picture. But, in the end I'm glad when I'm finished and if anything is still not like intended, I might get back to later..

Hehe, well, I love them as well- did I told you once that I bought two Katana quite a while ago? Real ones, with a sharp blade and everything :) They're really nice to look at, one even got a black blade :D

Lucky your at least motivated enough to finish what images you start,
sadly the same can't be said about myself.

I have one katana that's fully sharpened, and it's quite beautiful,
it has a gold Tsuba with little samurai carved on it, came with a fancy case too.

is your Katana with a black blade also sharp? I don't think I've seen a Katana with black blade,
you should get a shot of it and put it on dev! I might get some pics of mine too. ^_^

Well, sometimes you need to fight enough to finish a picture- or just do a break and continue later on with the picture. That's what I do and that's the reason why I sometimes don't upload something for ages :P

Mine has a Tsuba with a dragon- the other one isn't that fancy (just a round Tsuba with some cross-bracings), but I like it nonetheless :)

Yes, the black one is sharp as well. In the shop where I bought them, I also seen a Katana with a orange/red blade, very pretty, but the shopkeeper meant the color will worn out if you use the sword.. They made their blades themselves, which is fantastic, so you can ask a whole lot of questions and they are most of the time able to give you an answer. I think the black blade has some other "ingredients" as other blades, which makes the blade black. Since it's in the metal itself (unlike the red blade, where it's just some kind of alloy), it shouldn't wore out the color if you use the blade.

Heh, nice idea.. but it's kind of difficult to get a shot of a sword... 'cause they're so long and thin.. should have a good background for this! But I'll try :)
