Legend of a Sword by OrmIrian Legend of a Sword by OrmIrian
Again a sword from me: This time my motivation was a little bit different than the last time.
I always had some diffuse dreams about having a sword at home- not for something special, just for having it- I love swords, especially katanas  Well, I never cared much about this dream- until now. Because I noticed that there is a sword-shop here! I never knew they got any shops for things like that around here too..!
But when I saw the prizes for all the swords, I knew I can’t afford one yet… I still have this dream, but I guess I will have to wait with it :P When I realized that, I still felt this happiness and I somehow really wanted to draw another sword- this time with a background! :D
Well, this picture is the result of this little story :P

I hope you like it :)

Yeah, I have to agree with the simple swords: Most fantasy swords look really awesome, but would be probably completely useless in a real fight... :P I wanted to express my love for katanas in this picture, that's why I didn't really wanted to draw a sword with many details and stuff :P

I use Photoshop CS3- but I'm sure other programms (like Gimp) also have a similar function like that.. It's really practical to get an interesting lighting sometimes :)

I agree. In a couple of mine, "Fires of Vengeance" and "I Will Rise" I put lens flairs in the eyes. It really makes them pop. I also like to very slightly bumpmap or emboss the picture very slightly sometimes. It leads to some interesting pictures.

Lens flairs are really difficult to use them correctly in a picture- if you use them too much it will look really weird :P

True. But, that is true of any other effect too, doesn't matter which one. Effects are great, if used in moderation.

Yep- that's true- and it definitaly needs some experiments to get the right balance for the effects. :P

That is how I've learned my programs. Trial and error. (More error than successes, but, that is normal.)

Help! I'm in love with this picture! I'm a sword nut, and you just found the way to my heart. (Just please don't stab me there with it!) This is beautiful. I have a sharpened stainless steel katana, but, what I really want is a Cold Steel 1791 British light cavalry saber. (Look on Youtube for a cutting demo.) But I'll admit katanas are beautiful swords too. And this is a beautiful picture. And I love the lighting too.

Now I'm really envious- I would love to buy a sword (katana), but somehow, they're really expensive ^^; I noticed there is a katana-shop even here, but they only sell carbonsteel katanas- which means they will rost if you don't look after them every now and then- and the oil for swords like this is also rather expensive ^^;
Oh wow.. I've seen a cutting test for a Cold Steel 1796 Light Cavalry Saber right now :O I think the quality is quite the same like a good katana- probably even better :P
Still, I think I just prefer katanas because they look nicer then most western swords :)

You're welcome! Katana's are pretty swords. Just a thought on the oil issue, I have a few swords with carbon steel and have a much cheaper method of preventing rust. Gun oil. I don't know what kind of gun laws you have over there, but, you should still be able to find gun oil fairly cheap. Especially if you buy military surplus. I just mention this in passing because all you want is a "wall hanger" and for that stainless is really good. Question: have you considered ordering one over the internet? I have a katana in stainless that I got from a company called BudK, and it only cost me $20 American and it looks pretty good. They have a slew of them for under $50. Just a thought.

Heh, that would be kind of weird if I buy gun oil, even though I don't even have a gun ^^; Well, the gun laws are pretty strict over here (you need to have a license if you want to buy one) and since I'm definitaly not in the military I don't know if I would get the oil easily :P Still, thanks for the idea!
Yeah, actually I looked more for a 'wall hanger' (still a sharp one, if possible).. I looked around the internet- but to be honest, I only saw katanas out of carbonsteel around here and it would be really expensive to buy a katana from America- Plus, I don't really trust every shop on the internet ^^; . I found a katanashop here in Switzerland that sells carbonsteel katana for 100$- that was the one I'm asking myself if I should buy it :P

Cool. The carbon steel katana seems like a good idea, and a good buy at $100. Oh, FYI
